Santa Teresa

Santa Teresa and its quieter neighboring village Mal País together form one of the most beautiful stretches of coast on the Nicoya Peninsula, long sandy beaches, first-class surf conditions and a relaxed, international vibe. I spent several days here and enjoyed the perfect mix of surfing, yoga and fresh seafood at beach restaurants.

Getting to Santa Teresa

From San José I took the bus toward the coast, including a beautiful ferry crossing over the Gulf of Nicoya from Puntarenas to Paquera. In total I was traveling for around 6 hours (bus from about €9–11). If you prefer more comfort, book a shuttle minivan including the ferry (from about $52, 4–6.5 hrs), which saves you the transfer. In Cóbano there are no official taxis, but locals offer rides for a small fee.

Where We Stayed in Santa Teresa

Casa Zen Guesthouse and Yoga Center

I stayed at Casa Zen Guesthouse and Yoga Center, just a few minutes' walk from the beach. The atmosphere was pleasantly calm and exactly right for a combination of surfing, yoga and relaxation, the only downside was the shared bathrooms. If you want more comfort, look for accommodation with a private bathroom.

Playa Manzanillo

If you like it really secluded, head (by 4x4 or a short hike) to the hidden Playa Manzanillo south of Playa Hermosa, crystal-clear, calm water, but no restaurants, so bring your own water and snacks.
