Ionian Islands

Zakynthos

A green Ionian island with crystal-clear water, spectacular cliffs and the world-famous shipwreck in Navagio Bay – wilder and calmer than the Cyclades.

Navagio Beach (Shipwreck Beach) – only reachable by boat, with the stranded wreck of the "Panagiotis"Blue Caves and the cliffs of Keri, most beautiful on a sunset boat tourProtected beaches like Gerakas and Kalamaki, important nesting sites for loggerhead sea turtlesTurquoise bays like Porto Limnionas and Xigia, ideal for snorkeling
💡

Best to book the boat tour to Shipwreck Beach directly at the departure point in Porto Vromi rather than through middlemen in Keri – I paid just €15–20 per person there for the same tour that cost €25 elsewhere.

Getting to Zakynthos

We flew with Condor from Frankfurt, about €400 per person including luggage, flight time roughly 2.5 hours (direct flight). Since the island is fairly large, a rental car straight from the airport is worth it, we paid €260 for a week including insurance. Tip: book the car in advance and pick it up and drop it off right at the airport.

Where We Stayed on Zakynthos

Casa Del Mar

Central in Laganas, just a 2-minute walk to the beach, ideal for a relaxed stay close to the sand. About €100 a night, good value for money. Modern rooms with balcony or terrace, free parking right at the hotel, perfect location just steps from the beach. Downside: breakfast is included but very basic with no choices, no buffet, not great on taste, we decided to eat breakfast elsewhere.

Verdict: A great place to stay with modern comfort and a top location. Anyone who values a proper breakfast should look for alternatives.

The Best Beaches on Zakynthos

Laganas Beach

On the south coast, one of the island's most popular beaches. A wide sandy beach with clear, blue water and a lively atmosphere, lined with hotels, restaurants and bars. Part of Zakynthos National Park, since this is where endangered loggerhead turtles nest, boat tours to the turtle islands leave right from the beach.

Verdict: A lively beach with plenty of amenities and a great mix of relaxation and entertainment. Anyone looking for peace and quiet will find calmer beaches on Zakynthos.

Laganas Beach

Kalamaki Beach

On the south coast, a few kilometers from Laganas, one of the island's longest beaches. Fine, golden sand stretching over 5 km, a relaxed atmosphere away from the crowds, impressive backdrop of green hills, important nesting site for loggerhead turtles. No loud water sports allowed due to nature protection. Gently sloping, clear water, ideal for families.

Verdict: A beautiful, unspoiled beach with a calm atmosphere, ideal for relaxed beach days and wildlife watching.

Kalamaki Beach

Gerakas Beach

At the southeastern tip, one of the most beautiful and pristine beaches on the island. A protected nesting area for loggerhead turtles, no water sports or big beach bars, a calm and relaxed atmosphere. Crystal-clear, shallow water, a small wooden boardwalk leads to the best spots, information boards explain the conservation project.

Verdict: A beautiful, unspoiled beach with fine sand and turquoise water, ideal for nature lovers.

Gerakas Beach

Navagio Beach

Also known as Shipwreck Beach, on the northwest coast, one of Greece's most famous beaches. Surrounded by towering cliffs, only reachable by boat, brilliant white pebble sand and turquoise water. The highlight is the famous "Panagiotis" shipwreck, which ran aground here in 1980. We took a boat tour, an unforgettable experience, and a detour to the viewpoint above the cliffs is well worth it too.

Verdict: An absolute must-see on Zakynthos, offering one of the island's most spectacular backdrops.

Navagio Beach

Xigia Beach

On the north coast, known for its natural sulfur spring with healing properties. A small, idyllic beach of white pebbles, crystal-clear turquoise water, a faint sulfur smell you quickly get used to. Steep rocks around the bay create an almost private atmosphere. A small taverna above offers a wonderful view.

Tip: definitely bring water shoes, the pebble beach and rocks make getting in a bit tricky.

Verdict: A small but special beach with unique water and a relaxed atmosphere.

Xigia Beach

Porto Limnionas

On the west coast, a breathtaking bay surrounded by rocks, perfect for snorkeling lovers. Glass-clear water in different shades of blue, not a classic sandy beach but natural rock plateaus, with steps leading down into the water. At the nearby taverna, two loungers with an umbrella can be rented for about €20.

Verdict: A true natural paradise and a must for anyone seeking turquoise water, peace and a unique swimming experience.

Porto Limnionas

Skinari Cape

At the northern tip, a breathtaking setting with steep cliffs, turquoise water and impressive sea caves. Steps lead down to several levels, with glass-clear water perfect for swimming and snorkeling.

Verdict: A real highlight for nature lovers and anyone seeking a quiet swimming spot away from the big beaches.

Boat tour to Shipwreck Beach & Blue Caves

From Porto Vromi Anafonitria, €20 to €25 per person. One of the best ways to experience the famous Shipwreck Beach and the impressive Blue Caves up close, spectacular scenery along the coast, crystal-clear water invites you to swim.

Tip: many street stalls sell tickets as middlemen at higher prices, the closer you get to the departure point, the cheaper it gets. We paid €25 per person through a middleman in Keri, only €20 directly from the operator, and just €15 right at the harbor.

Verdict: A genuine must-do on Zakynthos.

Viewpoint over Shipwreck Beach

The famous viewpoint for the iconic postcard shot, a spectacular view, though it's just a small platform with lots of tourists. A drone lets you experience the beach from a new perspective.

Tip: a fantastic spot for sunset.

Turtle Rescue Center

Right at Gerakas Beach, perfect to combine with a beach day and some animal conservation. Dedicated to protecting sea turtles, fascinating insight into their work, a painting station for kids, option to donate. Daily 9am to 8pm.

Tip: use the visit as a lead-in to enjoying the beautiful Gerakas Beach afterward.

Various tasting options from €7 (3 wines, breadsticks, dip) up to €50 (4 selected wines, bruschetta, cheese, cold cuts). Daily 10am to midnight, tastings only 10am to 5pm.

Olive oil shops and tastings

Various providers (Vouno, Elies Press, Olive Press Museum Zante) offer tastings of olive oils, pastes, olives, honeys and lotions. Our favorite was the Olive Press Museum Zante, we especially loved the tasting there.

Cliffs of Keri

Impressive cliffs with a breathtaking view, especially at sunset. A short walk from the parking lot through a wooded stretch leads to the "Scenic Viewpoint" with spectacular coastal scenery. Another great spot is the "Keri Lighthouse Restaurant".

Our Verdict on Zakynthos

After Santorini the year before, we wanted to see a greener, wilder side of Greece – and Zakynthos delivered exactly that. The island surprises with its variety: from lively sandy beaches like Laganas, to protected bays with sea turtles, to the iconic Navagio Bay. Perfect for anyone who wants to combine Greek island romance with spectacular nature and wildlife encounters.
