Amalfi Coast

The spectacular coastline between Sorrento, Positano and Amalfi, with colorful houses cascading steeply down to the sea, narrow lanes, small coves and one of Italy's most beautiful coastal roads.

Getting to Amalfi Coast

Independent arrival by car, from Tropea about 5 hours over roughly 350 km, from the coasts of Calabria to the hills of Campania. Our accommodation was in Agerola, a bit above the coast, quieter and cheaper, but with good connections to the coastal towns. Alternatives: train to Naples plus bus to Agerola (significantly longer), or a flight to Naples followed by a rental car or public transport. From Agerola we took day trips by bus to the harbor of Amalfi (about 45 minutes) and then continued by ferry to Positano (about 30 minutes). Important note: bus tickets can't be bought on the bus itself, but at kiosks, select cafés or via an app. Tip: The roads along the Amalfi Coast are often narrow, winding and heavily trafficked in high season, parking is limited and expensive.

Accommodation in Amalfi Coast

OSprittHouse (Agerola)

A quiet and practical location in Agerola, perfect for trips along the Amalfi Coast, the nearest bus stop just 3 to 5 minutes on foot. €100 a night, good value for money. Modern, tasteful furnishings with a great atmosphere, own terrace with a whirlpool and cozy seating, friendly and helpful hosts, free parking right at the property.

Verdict: A stylish place to stay with high comfort and excellent amenities, especially the private terrace with a whirlpool makes the stay something special.

Day Trips Instead of Staying in Positano and Amalfi

I didn't stay directly in Positano or Amalfi, but instead took the bus and ferry from my accommodation in Agerola for day trips, a good alternative if you want to avoid the high hotel prices right on the coast. Amalfi's harbor is also the departure point for ferries to Positano and Sorrento.

The Best Beaches in Amalfi Coast

Beaches Around Sorrento

The beaches are mostly small and partly artificial platforms along the steep coast, for more extensive swimming it's worth a trip to the nearby Amalfi Coast or to Capri.

Beaches Around Sorrento

Spiaggia Grande (Positano)

Positano's central beach, small but with pebbles and a view of the colorful houses typical of the Amalfi Coast.

Fornillo (Positano)

A somewhat quieter beach than Spiaggia Grande, also with pebbles and a lovely view of the coast.

Fornillo (Positano)

Amalfi's Main Beach

The main beach right in town is modest in size, quieter coves can be found in the neighboring towns along the coastal road.

The Best Food in Amalfi Coast

Cuisine Around Marina Grande (Sorrento)

Lemons shape the local cuisine, from limoncello to lemon cake (delizia al limone), plus fresh fish at the restaurants along Marina Grande.

Restaurants Around the Cathedral (Amalfi)

In the lanes around the cathedral there are restaurants serving fresh seafood and the regional specialty scialatielli ai frutti di mare.

The Best Activities in Amalfi Coast

Boat Trip to Capri

A boat trip to Capri, a drive along the Amalfi Coast and a trip to the ruins of Pompeii are among the most popular activities.

Boat Trip to Capri

Bus and Ferry Ride Along the Coast

Bus to the harbor of Amalfi, then a ferry across to Positano, this combination turned out to be the most relaxed way for me to explore the Amalfi Coast, with a great view of the coast from the water.

Amalfi Cathedral and Coastal Road

Visiting the historic cathedral and a walk through the narrow lanes around the harbor are among the most popular activities, along with continuing along the spectacular coastal road.
