Getting to Madeira

With TAP Air Portugal, €508 per person including checked baggage, outbound flight around 6.5 hours, return flight around 8.75 hours including a stopover. Things got adventurous right from the start: shortly before our scheduled landing in Funchal, we were denied landing clearance due to bad weather, and the plane turned around and flew back to Lisbon. So we found ourselves unexpectedly back in the Portuguese capital and spontaneously spent a night there, before reaching Funchal about 30 hours later on a replacement flight. For getting around Madeira, a rental car is recommended for maximum freedom and flexibility, we booked one for 8 days for a total of €168, including full coverage insurance and unlimited mileage, a manual Fiat 500. Booked through Check24 with 'Driving Madeira Rent-a-Car', pickup was directly across from our hotel rather than at the airport. Tip: Book your rental car in advance to secure the best prices and availability.

Where We Stayed on Madeira

The Views Baía, Funchal

Located above Funchal with sweeping views over the city and sea, with the old town, restaurants, shops and sights easily reachable by car or on foot. From around €140 a night, good to very good value for money. Very friendly and attentive staff, generous breakfast and dinner selection with buffet or à la carte restaurant, stylishly designed rooms with modern amenities, rooftop pool with panoramic views, a padel court and other leisure options. Downside: cleanliness in some areas left something to be desired, and too few loungers by the pool for the number of guests.

Verdict: A modern hotel with a stylish ambiance, a top location and plenty of extras, perfect for anyone who values good food, relaxed design and a great view over Funchal. Despite the minor shortcomings, a really lovely stay overall, definitely a good choice on Madeira.
