Sa Pa

A mountain town in the far north, surrounded by terraced rice fields and villages of ethnic minorities, popular for multi-day trekking tours and the cable car up Fansipan.

💡

Guided rice field tours had rather mixed reviews, if you book a hotel right in the middle of the rice terraces, you'll have the best view right outside your door.

Getting to Sa Pa

I flew from Hanoi to Lao Cai and continued by bus (about 1:20 hrs flight + 5:30–7:30 hrs bus, from €70 combined), the fastest option. Night buses or night trains from Hanoi (each about 17 hrs) are considerably cheaper, but take correspondingly longer.

Where We Stayed in Sa Pa

Laxsik Ecolodge

A bit outside the center, surrounded by picturesque rice fields, ideal for peace and relaxation. Transportation is needed to reach the center. From €80 a night, good value for money. A unique atmosphere with a dreamy view of the rice fields, tasteful and stylish decor, extremely friendly and helpful staff, delicious breakfast. Downsides: distance to the center, lack of signage at breakfast, unclear labeling of vegetarian dishes.

Verdict: Wins over with an idyllic location and a special atmosphere. If you're looking for peace amid nature, this is the place. Despite minor shortcomings, a clear recommendation.

The Best Activities in Sa Pa

Fansipan

Vietnam's highest mountain, breathtaking views and an unforgettable experience. The cable car ride takes you to the summit in just a few minutes with spectacular panoramas over the mountain landscape. At the top you'll find impressive temple complexes, statues and a small train that brings you even closer to the highest point. From €30 per person.

At Muong Hoa Station we continued by gondola up to Fansipan, the ride took about 20 minutes. It was naturally a bit cool at the top, a sweater is recommended. The path from the gondola exit leads through a photo gallery and dining spots, the climb up consists of many stairs and is somewhat strenuous. Along the way there are a few restrooms, one or two dining spots and small temples, which we also visited. From the top you get the best view over the entire site.

Tip: Book your ticket in advance via Klook or directly at the station. Allow enough time for the hike, it's demanding but worthwhile.

Visiting the rice fields

Since the tours to the rice fields weren't rated very highly, we specifically chose a hotel surrounded by rice fields and only visited the fields around our hotel. We can highly recommend choosing a hotel between the rice fields in Sa Pa for a truly special stay. If you choose more central accommodation in Sa Pa town, you should explore the rice fields on your own or book a tour.
