A city on the west coast with a coastal walkway more than 10 kilometers long and the Len Lye Centre for modern art, but above all the starting point for the impressive Mount Taranaki volcano in Egmont National Park.

Where We Stayed in New Plymouth

Oakura Beach Holiday Park

Relatively close to the beach, though the access isn't very inviting. 50 NZD for 2 people/night. Positive: relatively close to the beach, good spot for a short stay. Negative: outdated and unclean sanitary facilities, unappealing beach access, poor value for money.

Verdict: For the high price, the stay was disappointing, the sanitary facilities are outdated and cleanliness leaves something to be desired, overall rather unsatisfying compared to other campgrounds.

The Best Activity in New Plymouth

Egmont National Park

On the west coast, known for the impressive Mount Taranaki, a volcano visible from far away. Almost all the trails loop around the mountain, guaranteeing great views and varied scenery. The region is very green, with the heavy rainfall growing dense forest full of ferns, moss and ancient trees, and there are both easy walks and longer day or multi-day tours.

We did a shorter hike and found the mix of rainforest, open areas and views of the volcano very special. Starting points: the North Egmont Visitor Centre or Dawson Falls in the south.
