Where We Stayed in Whangamatā

Whangamata Motor Camp

Central in Whangamata, just a few minutes' walk from the long sandy beach, with the town center's supermarket, cafés and shops also within easy walking distance. 52 NZD per night for a site and 2 people. Central location, plenty of sites for vans and campers, simply equipped but adequate sanitary facilities, practical laundry facilities. Downside: sites offer little shade, facilities rather plain and functional.

Verdict: A practical campground for anyone who values being close to the beach and the town center, if you're after an uncomplicated, central place to stay, this is a good choice.

The Best Activity in Whangamatā

Whangamata: guided kayaking to Donut Island

The tour starts right from the beach in Whangamata, a 2-hour kayak trip through the lagoon, past volcanic rocks and quiet surroundings. Donut Island is a nature reserve, our guide told us a lot about the local flora and fauna. We paddled through a narrow passage only accessible by kayak or paddleboard, and admired the turquoise lagoon. In between we even got to jump in the water and cool off. Cost around 20 NZD per person.

Verdict: The tour was relaxing and exciting at the same time, a great experience amid untouched nature.
