Koh Phi Phi

Koh Phi Phi, one of Thailand's best-known island groups, is a paradise for beach lovers, divers and adventurers. The island captivates with impressive limestone cliffs, turquoise water and a lively atmosphere. Maya Bay is especially famous, having gained worldwide recognition through the film "The Beach." But Koh Phi Phi has much more to offer, from hidden coves to spectacular viewpoints to a pulsing nightlife.

Best early in the morning or with a sunset boat tour – during the day the main spots get very crowded.

Getting to Koh Phi Phi

With Ao Nang Travel and Tour, around €12.50 per person, roughly 2 hours. Our crossing was quick and easy, we started at Nopparat Thara Pier with the express ferry, which offers a comfortable and speedy connection to the island. Tip: especially in high season, it's worth booking the ticket in advance, as the ferries fill up fast. Arrival is relaxed, the main pier sits right in the center, restaurants, accommodation and beaches are all within walking distance.

Where We Stayed on Koh Phi Phi

P2 Wood Loft

Central location, restaurants, bars, shops and the ferry all within easy walking distance, perfect for exploring Koh Phi Phi without any hassle. €34 per night, good value for money. Great location, friendly and helpful staff, modern rooms with stylish design. Small downside: the rooms had an unpleasant smell that took a bit away from the stay.

Verdict: A good choice for travelers looking for a centrally located place with modern design. Despite a few small flaws, it wins you over with location and comfort.

The Best Activities on Koh Phi Phi

Island tour: Monkey Beach, snorkeling, Maya Beach

We booked this tour directly through our hotel, an easy and convenient way to enjoy the experience stress-free. Cost around €30 per person, departure from the main pier where the ferries also dock.

Monkey Beach

Fairly small, and we found the scene there a bit sad. Some tourists didn't respect the monkeys retreating and instead followed them for photos, selfies and videos. Please remember: when visiting Monkey Beach, keep your distance and respect the animals' need to retreat.

Monkey Beach

Snorkeling and swimming

This spot was simply a dream and matched our expectations of Thailand perfectly. Bring your own snorkel gear or use a free one from the operator, lots of beautiful, colorful fish, and the atmosphere on board was simply great.

Maya Beach

A protected and famous beach with white sand and clear, glowing water, known as the filming location for "The Beach." At the time of our visit, swimming in the sea was banned, the Thai military would whistle back visitors who went in deeper than their knees.

Bioluminescence

At the end of the tour we made a spontaneous stop by the cliffs just before the harbor, since you could see bioluminescence there after dark, created by tiny, single-celled algae that glow blue. That day there wasn't much of it, but it was still a beautiful and unforgettable experience.
